Halloween 2017

Happy Halloween!

Okay, I know that’s a little late. One of these days I’ll get around to posting a costume DIY before the 31st of October.

October was crazy busy at work (actually this year has been crazy busy at work) so I didn’t have a ton of time to DIY a costume this year. I was debating between being Old Taylor or Kiki, and for the sake of simplicity and people actually knowing what I was, I went with Kiki.

In case you don’t know who Kiki is, she is the main character in the Studio Ghibli film Kiki’s Delivery Service. My mom bought it for me on a whim when I was about 7 or 8. She saw a little witch with a little black cat on the cover of a clamshell VHS tape (I’m old) at the store and thought “Nicole would like that!” and bought it. The rest is history.

If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. Kiki sets off on her own to begin her Witch training with her black cat companion, Jiji. Kirsten Dunst voices Kiki, Phil Hartman is Jiji and Matthew Lawrence (talk about a throwback) voices love interest Tombo. She ends up working/living at a bakery. Witches, black cats, and baked goods? Are you beginning to see why I love this movie?

Sources for my costume:

Dress from Amazon

Bow headband from Amazon

Jiji plush from Amazon

Flats from Target (I already owned these)

Similar Broom (already owned this too, from a costume when I was a kid)

Similar brown leather cross body bags (I already owned mine and use it most days. Most of these are cute and inexpensive and you could wear them again!)

Radio I made from an empty box of soap covered in red construction paper. I drew on dots and glued a ribbon to the top. I wanted to paint bottle caps black and glue them on as knobs but ran out of time.

Overall I spent about $40 plus tax. The dress, in spite of costing only $16, is surprisingly pretty decent quality and I’ll definitely wear it again. I’ve washed it twice now (once before and once after wearing on Halloween – cold, delicate, hang dry) and it hasn’t pilled or stretched or lost any threads. It’s a little short so I’ll probably wear it with tights for Fall.

And my kitties love the Jiji plush!
