Black Cat Appreciation Day

Hello all!

Today is an opportunity to talk about something near and dear to my heart, so please forgive this moment of soapbox grandstanding.

As a human to two black felines, I am always excited to celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day and show my kitties a little extra love.

Did you know animals with black fur are the least likely to be adopted from shelters? Whether it’s superstition or wanting a pet that’s more “Instagram-worthy”, black cats and dogs (and even bunnies) are often passed over.

Sure, it’s sometimes harder to get a good picture of them, but when you do – wowza. Look at that svelte black fur. So regal. So majestic.

Otis sits atop his porcelain throne like the true king of the suburban jungle he is.

And Lola, lounging like the Queen of Sheba, surveying you with her sultry bedroom eyes.

My kitties were feral babies being kept at a plant nursery by a nice man who trapped and fixed the feral cats running around his property. They were dirty and flea-ridden and little Lola had a big gash down her back. I took them home (and to the vet) and cleaned them up and kept them in a huge dog crate at the end of my bed at night so I wouldn’t step on them in the dark.

Being feral, they took a little extra TLC and little extra time to socialize, but they are the goofiest, cuddliest, happiest little buddies and I don’t know what I would do without them.

If you are going to adopt a kitty (or a dog or a bunny), please consider adopting a black one. Or a three legged one, or a blind one! They all need love πŸ–€
