Happy Bastille Day!
Today marks the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille (a fortress-like prison in Paris) on July 14, 1789, and celebrates France’s independence.
I decided to wear a Parisian-inspired outfit in honor of the occasion (minus the beret, which is buried in my closet somewhere).

Bastille Day is also a wonderful excuse to imbibe one of my favorite cocktails, the French 75. Traditionally made with gin, champagne, lemon juice and simple syrup, it is delightfully bubbly and refreshing on a hot July evening. I’ve also had it made with cognac, but it makes for a very sweet and boozy drink.
Here’s what you’ll need:
2 oz gin
1/2 oz lemon juice
1 tsp simple syrup (recipe below)
5 oz chilled champagne
lemon peel for garnish, optional
Pour gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker filled about halfway with ice. Shake well and strain into champagne flute. Top with about 5 oz champagne and garnish with lemon peel.
To make simple syrup, all you need are equal parts water and white sugar. A cup of each will make about a cup of simple syrup. In a medium saucepan combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool and chill thoroughly before use. Simple syrup can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks in the fridge.
Refrigerate your ingredients and your champagne flute ahead of time so your drink stays nice and chilly! Santé!
